汉英词典中面向应用的以可嵌入性为核心的新词族翻译原则

群落中的词语又同属类似的汉语构词方式(如偏正、主谓等等)下的词语,因而就产生了类似“家族”的性质。汉语中本来就有“词族”的概念,因此本文定义这样互相之间具有相似特征的新词语群落为汉语新词族,即“汉语中新的词族”的意思。

Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1. An Overview of the Research
With the rapid social development and the growing impact of globalization, the language of a country is undergoing dramatic changes. The vocabulary of a language expands as new words and new meanings come into being at an unprecedented pace. In English, the word neologism is used to signify such a phenomenon and it can also refer to a new word or expression itself. Neologism almost takes place in every existing language. In Chinese, statistics shows there come out about 1,000 neologisms in the language each year, among which some derive from the local culture while others are loanwords from foreign languages. Driven by the analogy mechanism in the mind of language users, a great number of Chinese neologisms have demonstrated a similar and distinct pattern of word formation in which the neologisms share one word or a phrase to form word families.
The dramatic emergence of NCWF reflects the least-effort principle in language practice by language users, demonstrates the existence of conceptual metaphor and conceptual analogy in people's cognition of word meanings, and shows some specific social mentality or cultural trend. NCWFs account for a great proportion of Chinese neologisms. The meanings of a number of NCWFs, once widely accepted, become an indispensable part of the Chinese vocabulary and have been absorbed into language dictionaries as new entries.
As a kind of reference books, dictionaries have made tremendous contributions in terms of spreading knowledge and recording human wisdom. They can be categorized into various types by subject such as language dictionaries, encyclopedia, and dictionaries for specific readers, among which language dictionaries take the largest proportion of the market share probably because of their main function of serving the most readers, which is to offer explanations on the meanings and usages of words that are commonly used in a language. With the increasing international exchanges, bilingual and even multilingual dictionaries have also come into being to meet the need of speakers of at least two languages and among them C-E dictionaries mainly serve users of both Chinese and English. The users of C-E dictionaries can be pided into two major groups: one group as learners of English with Chinese as the native language and the other as native English speakers learning Chinese.
