American TESOL Teaching and its concept然而,目前国内对英语教学概念和模式的研究还处于认知和理论讨论阶段,并没有对具体的英语实践教学进行深入的适应。英语教学中很难运用TESOL教学理念。到目前为止,中国学生还没有真正从TESOL教学理念和教学模式中受益。
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is teaching English for the foreigners. The object of TESOL is the population whose native language is not English. Therefore, the mother tongue and cultural background of the learners have paid much more attention in the process of the TESOL teaching.
It is worth to pay attention that the TESOL emphasizes the English Teaching rather than just only English. People who have related degrees on English do not necessarily have the basic conditions for English teaching. TESOL is a major related to English teaching and the requirement for the learners is much high. Therefore, certain TESOL teaching concept and teaching pattern are bound to be beneficial to the College English teaching in China. The basic concept of TESOL is that the body is the students and the teachers play an auxiliary role. All the behaviors of the teachers in the class are carried out around the theme of students. Also, the purpose of TESOL is thatgiving full play to the subjective initiative of students to have good teaching effects.
1.The teaching pattern of TESOL
1.1Course Design
The teachers of the TESOL course take the students as the main body and take the teaching methods to guide the students to learn. Teachers will design various activities, so that every student can participate in these activities. The classroom practices can be used to learnEnglish, so as to achieve the purpose of using the language flexibly. There are no fixed teaching materials of the TESOL course.Teachers will give some materials to students just referring to some textbooks as the blueprint. The teaching plan will be announced on the network at the beginning of each semester by teachers. And then the learners should choose the sections they want to explain or go up onto the platform according to that teaching plan.During the learning process, the students will take turns on the platform and the teachers will make a proper comment on the student's speech.
The TESOL course attaches great importance to the students' participation in the classroom, and the points of the students in the classroom accounts for 50% of the total results. This grading standardnot only improves the language expression ability but also raises the application skills of the students.
1.2Classroom organization and the role of teachers
In the United States the classroom activities are much more pluralistic. Each class is about 2.5 hours. The TESOL course is relatively short, about 1.5 hours. At the beginning of each class, the teacher will explain the teaching skills that will be learned on the day. The lecture time of the teacher is about half an hour or so. The remaining one hour is for the students. Then the panel discussions and audio-visual presentation by multimedia will be used in the classroom. At last, students are invited to come to the stage to demonstrate or each group representative must give opinions of their discussing results.
Teachers will pay attention to every student's performance in group discussion, and no student can use native language or lazy to participate in the discussionin any form of activity on the TESOL class. During this process, teachers need to mobilize the classroom atmosphere, maintaining the classroom order, and even to give directions on the students' errors.
1.3Teaching Practice
In the United States, TESOL learners generally need a teaching practice at the local middle school for half a year. During this teaching practice, students need to accomplish the goal of converting their identity to English teachers. The teaching skills in the classroom must be applied to the teaching practice. Therefore, the English application ability and adaptability of the TESOL learners will be approved. For example, if the students during the teaching practice are blacks, the TESOL learners should have a higher level of listening.
Different from the China students, are very active in the classroom andlike to participate in classroom discussions.Usually, American students have questions to ask the teacher. Therefore, teachers in the classroom should have strong control ability andpsychological quality.
2.The application of TESOL concept in college English teaching
The American TESOL course has no ready-made textbook, but according to the language level and cultural background of the teaching object, teachers write their own handouts. The handout will be handed out to the students at the beginning of each class, which ensures the timeliness of the teaching materials and enables the students to understand the latest language materials.
We can also avoid the whole semester using the same textbook, owned by teachers in the classroom materials, weekly issued to the students of different materials, the selected content is close to the living things, as far as possible to keep up with the current affairs and history, science and technology, many aspects of entertainment and sports. It is very possible for teachers to discuss the events of the previous day's news events.
The rich and colorful elements in lectures can enable students to stay in situational and authentic language environment, acquire new knowledge, accept new experience and cultivate new abilities. As an example of a TESOL class in the United States at the graduate student stage, the materials prepared by the teacher change from the news content of the CNN in the United States. The content of the material is: people from three countries (India, USA, China) are in distress in the Japanese earthquake, please ask for a group discussion and design plan to rescue them. The cultivation of language ability and logical thinking ability of the classroom learning materials and tasks to enable students to solutions and communicate with others in their own thinking, but also cultivate their emergency rescue capacity can be described as a double-edged sword is very welcome by students.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that in College English teaching, the concept of TESOL can be applied to many aspects, but not all courses are applicable to foreign popular and popular teaching methods, we can actively explore, but should be combined with the actual national college English teaching, selectively learn and imitate their concept and mode.
