Chapter1. Introduction to the Interpreting Task
1.1 Task Description
Established in 1998, Hebei Lincheng Packaging Machinery Manufacturing Co.,Ltd(LUM) is a factory specialized in producing full or semi-automatic 3/5/7-layercorrugated paperboard production line. It is also the first corporation certified toexport and import corrugated paperboard machinery in Hebei province. LUMparticipates in many famous corrugated carton or paperboard exhibitions at home andabroad to consolidate existing markets and develop new ones each year, In 2018,Intended to expand its market shares in India and looked for new agents in the west ofIndia, LUM participated in the 2018 India Corrugated Exposition ( 2018 India CorrExpo) which was held in Mumbai. LUM attended it with the help of Reed exhibitions,CCPIT Hebei Council and its agent in Chennai named Nexgen Global Machine Tools.
India Corr Expo is the only professional exhibition of corrugated paperboardindustry in India. Organized by Reed Exhibitions, CCPIT Hebei council and IndianCorrugated Case Manufacturers Association (ICCMA), India Corr Expo aimed atbuilding a platform for Chinese manufacturers and enterprises to access Indian market,helped them expand their market share and achieved trade co-operation. India CorrExpo was also dedicated to help local companies find high-quality suppliers. ThroughIndia Corr Expo, exhibitors can discuss with thousands of buyers face to face, andfind best suppliers. The exhibition also offered exhibitors opportunities to buildfactories as well as expand business in India rapidly.
The author was employed by Hebei Lincheng Packing Machinery ManufacturingCo., Ltd (LUM) from October 1 to 8, 2018 to interpret for the general manager andengineers of LUM in India Corr Expo. Before the exhibition, the author was alsohired by LUM to interpret for the construction and design of the stand with Indra. It isa company which is mainly responsible for the exhibition construction and design inIndia. During the exhibition, the author interpreted for LUM and Nexgen. After theexhibition, the author also interpreted for the general manager of LUM to visit thefactories and agents who bought machines from LUM in India. This report is based onthe interpreting practice for LUM, including exhibition interpreting and escortinterpreting.

1.2 Client’s Requirements
This task required the author to be punctual firstly. Never be late for any event.In order to complete the task successfully, the author arrived in the city of LUM theday before setting off for Beijing International Airport. On the one hand, the authorhad to set off with the other staffs. On the other hand, the author had to discuss theglossary and related documents with experienced staffs for comments and revisions.The India Corr was officially held from October 4 to 6 in Mumbai India, so the authorwas required to arrive at Beijing International Airport on October 1 with other staffsin case of flight delay. When arriving in India, the author was also required to reachthe exhibition hall in advance since the stand is still a raw space without any facilities.The author was asked to urge the exhibition designer, supervise their work and offerthem help if necessary.
The author was required to prepare beforehand and filter the information quicklyon site. It is necessary to collect as much information as possible before theinterpretation task. Even if the interpreter has interpreted for this industry before, sheshould get all possible non-confidential details from the client. Even one specializedterm can destroy her work. After getting this interpreting task, the author checked thewebsite of LUM and Nexgen, asked for the brochures and talked with the generalmanager of LUM in order to collect as much information as possible. During theflight, the author discussed about the machines with the engineers in Chinese in orderto know the machinery better. This means the author should be familiar with LUMmachinery, the configurations and parameters of the production line in advance. Thusshe can communicate more easily with customers and filter the information quicklyduring the interpreting task.

Chapter2. Interpreting Process
2.1 Pre-interpreting Preparations
2.1.1 Collecting background information
After accepting the task, the author did a lot of work on collecting backgroundinformation such as searching keyword of LUM, Hebei Lincheng Packing MachineryManufacturing Co., Ltd, corrugated carton industry, Mumbai, Nexgen, and 2018 IndiaCorr Expo through internet in order to get more information about this task. Theauthor searched for LUM and Nexgen’s websites in which included their companyprofile, factory drawings, technology, product description, certification andqualifications. The author also collected a large number of information aboutcorrugated carton or paperboard industry which helped her a lot during theinterpretation. At the same time, the author actively contacted LU, the generalmanager of the LUM, to learn more about the configurations and parameters of themachinery. LU offered the author one brochure of their machinery, one price offer ofLUM-B-2200-7-ply production line with details and one brief glossary of the LUMmachinery.
2.1.2 Building glossary
According to these information collected, the author made a glossary to deal withunexpected events in on-site interpretation. After checking it with Raja, the generalmanager of Nexgen Global Machine Tools, the author altered the glossary under theguidance of LU, Raja and these files.

2.2 In- interpreting Operation
2.2.1 The implementation of the interpreting task
First part was the interpretation for the construction and design of the stand. Inorder to save costs, Hebei Lincheng Packaging Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd.selected one Indian local exhibition builder Indra. It is a Singaporean company whichis mainly responsible for the construction and design of the stand. As early as July2018, the author had interpreted for LUM with Indra about the exhibition constructionplan. After arriving in India on the afternoon of October 2, the author and the directorof LUM directly got the exhibition hall. The day before the exhibition, the author andthe director went there to recheck if everything was ready for tomorrow’s exhibition.
From October 4 to 6, the author’s task was mainly to work as an interpreter tointroduce the machinery to clients, answer customer's questions, exchange effectivecontact information, assist both sides to negotiate, collect deposit to reach oralagreement and even sign contracts on site. The author also accompanied the generalmanager of LUM as an interpreter to meet with some old customers in Mumbai andattended the VIP dinner which is hosted by the exhibitor. After the work of the secondpart, the author not only realized the importance of adequate preparations, but alsoknew that interpretation tested the interpreter's physical and psychological abilities.

4.1 Verification
Due to different reasons such as accents, noise and so on, it is very common forthe interpreter to miss the points of the speaker or identify his communicativeintention. If so, no contextual effect or optimal relevance can be created. Because theexhibition was held in India and there were lots of customers with Indian accents, theauthor faced a lot related problems when interpreting. When facing this kind ofproblems, the author chose one strategy - verification. Verification means ask thespeaker several questions to check with him or ask him to repeat his speech directly. Ithelped the author get the points and comprehend the speaker’s intention. Verificationcan help the interpreter get the informative intention more easily and reach optimalrelevance under proper contextual environment.
In this case, the interpreter did not get the message due to the noise in theexhibition hall. So the author apologized to Lu firstly, then asked him to repeat thequestions loudly. Verification enabled the author get the communicative intentiondirectly and helped her infer the optimal relevance. This was the strategy the authorused to help her to comprehend the speaker’s communicative intention.

Chapter5. Conclusion
5.1 Related Considerations
Although the author had successfully completed this task, many defects anddeficiencies had been exposed in the interpreting process. In the process oftranscribing the recording after the author went back to China, she also found someproblems that are worth thinking about.
(1)The lack of technical terms.
Although the author searched for a lot information directly or indirectly afteraccepting LUM’s mission. On the basis of this, the author made a glossary list that shethought was perfect. But in the real interpreting process, it was difficult to beunderstood if the terminology is not idiomatic. It reminded the author should be morefamiliar with the glossary in different industries as much as possible. After thisinterpreting task, the author came into contact with mechanical manufacturingindustry and medical device industry. All of these enabled the author to be moreprofessional in different industries
(2)A scantiness of professional knowledge
This activity involved not only professional knowledge, but also a lot of normalknowledge, such as humanities, history, cross-cultural communication and so on. It isoften said that the interpreter is not only a language interpreter, but also a person whoknows encyclopedia. It means that only an interpreter with a rich background ofbilingual knowledge is a qualified interpreter. In the exhibition, the author met a largenumber of Indian people from Southeast of India, but because the author did notunderstand Indian culture and resulted in a lot oolong incident. In order to facilitatecooperation, interpreters must be fully aware of the customs of the client’s countries.
