Research on semantic field theory in English vocabulary teaching in senior high school
我们的学生往往会出现“长难单词辨认不清,简单词汇拼写不准”的怪圈。鉴于英语词汇教学这种现状,我们认为,探讨英语词汇教学的更加有效、更加可操作的途径就显得非常迫切和重要。
Chapter One Literature Review
1.1 The current research situations of Lexics
A lot of research work has been done to explore the ways of vocabulary acquisition. The theory of Memory shows that our memory system consists of two processes---information encoding and information extract.Encoding means to keep the information that needs to be memorized for future use, while the encoding mode influences the memory effect.Information extract refers to seek the needed code from the encoded information. The frequency of information extract has a close relation with the memory effect(Salthouse,1985).
Thus,in order to improve the effectiveness of memorizing words,we should create good situations, encourage the students to choose the ways of encoding actively.Besides, according to the Theory of Depths of Processing,Craik and Lockhart(1972)argue that the way in which we process stimuli is responsible for the persistence of the memory trace. They maintain that we process stimuli in a series of stages, from physical analysis to meaning. The more deeply we process stimuli,i.e.,the more we elaborate meaning with associations, images, stories “...on the basis of our past experience.”(P,675),the more likely we are to remember those stimuli. So we should try to deepen the relation between a word with its related aspects. In addition, founder of the term lexical approach Michael Lewis(1993) points out lexis is the basis of language and the key principle of a lexical approach is that“language consists of grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar.”Lexisxes consist of four different chunks:poly-words,collocations,institutionalized utterance, sentence heads. The Semantic Field Theory points out that some certain words in a language are connected with each other in the perspective of semantics, and they can make up a complete lexical system.
In the research of philology in China as well as the western world,“words”are always an indispensable part. The term“Lexicology”was first put forward by Noah Webster in 1828.At the beginning of the 20th century,in the field of the western modern Linguistics, the phonetic system and the grammatical system are the major research targets, while the lexical system are not attached enough importance to. “Linguists have had remarkably little to say about vocabulary and one can find very few studies which could be of any practical interest for language teachers”(Hedge& Tricia,1972:110).“Modern linguistic theories have placed little emphasis on vocabulary, focusing more on structures, functions, notions, and communicative strategies”(Dubin et al,2002:112).And the former Soviet Union linguists lead an important part in establishing the status of Lexicology as a main branch of Linguistics.
Late in the 20th century, especially after the 1990s,Lexicology has been paid great attention to as a relatively independent interdisciplinary.Meanwhile, the western linguists has begun to approve the validity of Lexicology and lots of great relative works has come out in a gradual manner, such as Elements of Lexicology (Doroszewski W.1973);An Outline of English Lexicology:Lexical Structure,Word Semantics and Word Formation(L.Lepka,1990);Précis de Lexicologie Anglais (Tournier J.1993),etc.In 2000,Words,Meaning and Vocabulary:An Introduction to
Modern English Lexicology(Howard J.&ZéAmvela E.)came out.
