Chapter OneINTRODUCTION
1.1 Research Background
In view of the exacerbation of ecological crisis as a formidable challenge inbuilding a complex ecosystem with civilization, health, vitality, and diapason, voicesof the pursuance of interaction between language and ecology stand out due to alinguistic consensus that language can be used by the social actor as a tool for takingactions(Scollon,2008,p.150)to solve ecological problems.Whereafter, ecolinguistics,as a discipline combining linguistics with ecology, has come into abroad audience’s view and gradually fallen into the spotlight.
Through nearly 50 decades of development in the West, ecolinguistics hasbecome increasingly well established, and now has extended the area of activity toseveral countries, among which the most important one is China(Fill&Penz,2017,p.438).The development of ecolinguistics in China is profoundly influenced by thetraditional ecological philosophy.Chinese ecological culture for thousands of yearsalways centres on the concept of harmony which is deeply grounded in the viewtowards multifarious relations between ecological factors in the whole universe(Qiao,2013).Ergo,there is a tendency to see Chinese ecolinguistics more as a pilot lamp ofharmony that lights up all sorts of harmonious relationships in ecosystem.
Following this trend,we correspondingly put forward HDA in a Chinese contextas a new analytical mode to carry out Chinese ecolinguistic studies from a perspectiveof“harmony”(Huang,2018),instead of a critical angle supported by ecologicaldiscourse analysis(EDA,henceforward).Theoretically,HDA,inheriting ideas onecological harmony from traditional Chinese philosophy as philosophical basis andtaking Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL,hereafter)as theoretical foundation, isan approach to unearth how discourse is structured to reflect or even foster ecologicalharmony via using language to“avoid conflict”(Fill,1993,as cited in Do Couto,2018,p.156)when human problems are dealt with,or even evince a“positive”side(Martin,2004;Stibbe,2018a)of these problems.Thereout,HDA contributes toadvocating harmonious values and further preserving the harmony of both natural andsocial ecosystems that sustain life.

1.2 Research Purpose and Questions
From the perspective of ecolinguistics, this study examines and analyzes Chineseanti-COVID-19 news reports with the initial goal of unveiling influences of thesenews discourses on a harmonious social ecosystem during the outbreak.China,as theearliest country to discover and control the virus(SCIO,2020),has currently made agreat contribution to controlling the virus in the world.Deservedly, the epidemic newscoverage from China exerts heavy impacts on the people’s struggle against theCOVID-19 around the world. For that reason, the ultimate goal of HDA in this studyis to raise people’s ecologically harmonious consciousness, and further shape theirecological behaviors to establish a healthy and harmonious social ecosystem in thefight against the COVID-19.
For the sake of achieving the aforementioned goals, the following four questionsare discussed in this study:(1)How are ecological properties distributed in terms of modal resources in theselected news reports?(2)What is the overall ecological attribute of Chinese anti-COVID-19 newsreports?(3)How does the ecological orientation of news reports vary throughout the fivedifferent epidemic stages in China and what motivates it to change?(4)What ecologically harmonious values are latent in Chinese anti-COVID-19news reports to maintain and promote harmony of social ecosystem during theoutbreak?

Chapter TwoLITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Introduction
In this chapter,a series of previous studies that largely enlighten the currentstudy are reviewed. At the outset, the attention is drawn to the existing literature onthe epidemic news discourse centering on the linguistic domain.Subsequently, thissection provides background for the proposal of HDA in a Chinese context via acompilation of literature covering ecolinguistics and EDA.In the end,the researchstatus of HDA is presented from theoretical basis, philosophical foundation, researchmethods and applied studies.Based on the above, the research gap is found.
In sum, apparently, the previous linguistic works on the COVID-19 epidemicnews discourse fasten considerably on the latent power ideologies, metaphor andidentity construction to date.Inasmuch as the COVID-19 pandemic is the mostfar-reaching to ail both social and natural ecosystem in a century, mulling over therelationships between ecological factors manifested in the fight against novelcoronavirus is quite essential.Ergo, the current study from a brand-new angle makesan attempt that aims at revealing the intricate relationship between ecology and theCOVID-19 epidemic, and more importantly, elucidating how news reports conveyecological values to strike a chord with and exert influence on readers during theoutbreak.

2.2 Studies on the COVID-19 Epidemic News Reports
Proverbially, the momentum of coronavirus does not stop there now.Over all, since the outbreak, the relevant news reports issued by the mainstream media both athome and abroad have been unremittingly thrust into the limelight. In China, amidst awide-ranging body of literature, most studies are in the field of journalism andcommunication sciences,by analyzing domestic media reports(e.g.,Yang&Song,2021)and China-related reports in foreign mainstream media(e.g.,Li&Shao,2021),to lucubrate the discourse mechanism, public opinion guidance and report strategy.Interms of studies abroad, one of the salient topics gets involved in issues oninternational politics considered in the COVID-19 news coverage.
On the linguistic side, the manner in which the epidemic news discourse isstructured by media to influence people’s ways of thinking and acting in the era ofmass media has been a trending direction of investigation.Among these studies, theadaptation of critical discourse analysis(CDA,hereafter)on the strength of mixedqualitative-quantitative methods occupies a large proportion(e.g.,Lian&Mi,2021).Another popular offshoot of research comes down to the gamut of cognitive sciencein which the epidemic news discourse is probed into from the angle of metaphor(e.g.,Dong,2020).Besides,there are a horde of studies in pragmatics that discuss theconstruction of identity in discourse(e.g.,Miao&Li,2020).Nevertheless,incomparison with Chinese counterparts, few foreign linguistic practitioners showinterest in the epidemic discourse analysis.

Chapter FourANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION OF ECOLOGICAL HARMONY IN CHINESEANTI-COVID-19 NEWS REPORTS
4.1 IntroductionThis chapter presents the ecological analysis of Chinese anti-COVID-19 newscoverage.Ecological property distribution of three types of modal resources comesfirst to display statistical outcomes of ecological tagging judged depending on theecosophy of this thesis. In the wake of the statistical analysis of ecological propertiesin terms of modalities, the overall ecological attribute of Chinese ani-COVID-19 newscoverage is unveiled.Tables and figures, severing as the quantitative evidence tosupport the analysis, are provided in each part to clearly demonstrate comparisons ofecological properties between different types of modalities.Afterwards, this study, from the macroscopic angle, inquires thoroughly ecological variations at the fivedifferent epidemic stages in China and attempts to give explanations in response toecological shifts in accordance with the characteristics of each phase. The discussionfastening on how modal resources erect ecological harmony is eventually conductedwith the help of examples excerpted from the dataset. The interpretations ofqualitative results compose the main body of this chapter.

Chapter FiveCONCLUSION
5.1 Major Findings
The present study has carried out a HDA of Chinese anti-COVID-19 newsreports, and has demonstrated how ecologically harmonious meanings behind modalresources can be identified and evaluated. In accordance with four questions proposedin the first chapter, the major findings can be summed up as follows:
In the analysis and discussion part, the first two questions come down to thedistribution of ecological attributes in terms of modal resources in the selected newsreports.Statistical results show that the three categories of modal resources are alladopted and endowed with a mixture of eco-beneficial,eco-ambivalent andeco-destructive properties, yet overall serve to create ecologically positive andfriendly values.
Among the three types of modal resources, the number of Finite modal operatorsaccounts for the largest. As a whole,Chinese media rely heavily on the usage ofmodal auxiliaries to construct eco-harmonious meanings.Throughout the dataset, theratio of eco-beneficial modalities of obligation makes up the largest share to imposean ecological responsibility on readers to assume.Apart from that, the considerablequantity of eco-beneficial modal auxiliaries falls into inclination to show thewillingness, determination and ability of defeating the virus.Finite modal operatorswith eco-ambivalent attribute, contributing to ensuring the objectivity, reliability andimpartiality of the journalism, are also largely adopted to remain ecologically neutralattitudes, which are prioritized in judging the likelihood of the ecological eventsconcerning the COVID-19.Compared with the above-stated ecological properties,eco-destructive Finite modal operators occur much less frequently in news reports tocreate ecologically detrimental values. With respect to modal value types, medianmodal auxiliaries are most used in cases where the eco-beneficial suggestions, intentions,or willingness are expressed.
